Nurture Kids’ Love for Nature and Conservation with Nature Crafts for Kids
Outdoor activities and nature crafts for kids are great ways for our children to learn, appreciate and promote environment conservation.
Mother Nature has provided us with many free materials for art, giving us the opportunity to express ourselves through creative touch.
Here are some simple crafts we have done with natural materials. Do these activities in an outdoor setting; embrace the refreshing feeling and appreciate that "close to nature" atmosphere.
Make Natural Air Freshener
Commercial air fresheners may contain chemicals that may be inappropriate to children or cause allergic reaction. However, we can always make air freshener using natural ingredients. I like to share one of such craft my kids learned to make recently.
Orange, Ribbon, Cloves and Skewer
What to do:
1. Tie a ribbon across the orange
2. Make pattern on orange with markers
3. Use the skewer to make small holes on the pattern (be careful if it is a juicy orange as the juice may spray into your eyes)
4. Insert cloves into the small holes
5. Hang orange as natural air freshener in airy space.
You can substitute different fruits and spices for different fragrance.
This natural orange air freshener can last up to a few weeks when put in car. Discompose orange in the garden after it runs out of fragrance.
Earth's Day Craft - Build Eco-System in Jar
This is one of those nature crafts for kids with Earth's Day theme.
Tropical rain forests are one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. Educating kids the importance of preserving rain forest becomes easier if they understand what an ecosystem is.
An empty glass jar with lid
Some Moss and Charcoal
Some Pebbles and Soil
A small and slow growing plant. Ensure the plant can fit into the glass jar.
Colorful seashells (optional)
Soak moss in some water to make it damp. Put all pebbles into glass jar. Add the charcoal followed by some damped moss. Add on the soil and small plant. Put the final layer of damped moss on top of soil. Do not cover the plant with the moss. Ensure the moss and soil is compact. Decorate with seashells if you want.
Sprinkle some water before cover with the jar’s lid. Put glass jar in a sunny spot.
To care for this miniature ecosystem in a jar, sprinkle water into the jar if it looks dry. Rotate the jar every couple of days to ensure every side gets even amount of sunlight.
Paint with Juices An Easy Food Craft
Paint with food juices is one of those nature crafts for kids we can use for young children. Using food instead of synthetic paint is ideal for preschoolers since it is non-toxic.
Look for fruits or vegetables with fresh looking color. Here are the suggested ingredients:
- Dragon fruit with red color fresh
- Pandan Leave or Screwpine leaves
Use a blender to blend each type of food. Add water slowly to determine the consistency of each type of juice you want. Some may be thick while others may be watery. Put each colored juice on palette. Let the kids unleash their creativity and start painting.
Leave the painting to dry outdoor or under the sun.
Homemade Play Dough with All Natural Ingredients Recipe
Most kids enjoy play dough craft. They can create many things out from the dough. Having a play dough recipe is handy. It allows us to create some dough any time the kids want to make play dough craft.
There are many play dough recipes available and I have tried some of them. I was thrilled to stumble upon this unique recipe in one of our holiday activities. This play dough recipe uses all natural ingredients to give the dough a natural fragrance scent.
Rarely do we have craft, which include natural scent. This is a great sensory craft for kids. The kids have a chance to learn about the touch and smell of natural herbs.
I prefer to involve the children when making the dough. It is another learning experience for the kids. They learn measurement and get to use their fine motor skills at the same time.
This recipe does not require heating. It is safe for the kids to handle.
Here is the recipe.....
- 1 part sandalwood
- 1/2 part cinnamon bark
- 1/2 part cardamom seeds
- Rose water
Grind the sandalwood, cinnamon bark and cardamom seeds into powder. Mix these powders using rose water according to the part as stated above. Slowly knead it into dough.
Pressed Flowers for Bookmark and Scrapbook
Beautiful design nature crafts for kids include pressed flowers. I always prefer to collect freshly dropped flowers than plucking them in respect for nature. Leave flowers in pages of a thick book for a few days. Do line the flowers on paper so that it does not leave marks on book pages. Design your bookmark on a small piece of paper including the pressed flowers. Glue them together and you have a beautiful simple bookmark. To last longer, laminate the bookmark.
Alternatively, make a scrapbook of pressed flowers.
Create your own design with leaves and vegetables. This simple craft is for children who are 5 years old and above.
What you need:
- Plain white cotton T-shirt
- Some micro fiber paint or Fabric Paint.
- Art brushes and painting palette
- Collect some leaves; pick those with prominent veins on the leaves. Cut some vegetables; ladyfingers, lotus roots are recommended or craft some potatoes or carrots.
- A piece of cardboard which can fit into the T-shirt
What to do:
- Fit the piece of cardboard into the T-shirt, ensure the T-shirt is laid flat, and straighten.
- Pick some color using the art brush and apply on the leaves (apply on the side with the veins) and cut vegetables. Press the leaves and vegetables on the white t-shirt.
- You can also paint the colors directly on the t-shirt using the art brushes.
- Once finished, leave it to dry. The t-shirt is ready to wear and is washable.
Do be careful when painting. Micro fiber stain cannot be washed off. You can use similar method to design your own cloth bags.
