Ecology for Kids - Make Environmental Conservation Action Part of Kid’s Daily Life
Home is where ecology for kid's lesson begins…This is the place we teach children to conserve, recycle and be aware how each daily action impact environment. As parent, we have to be role models, set example in ways of how to preserve the environment. We can take several daily actions as a small step in teaching our kids with ecology activities and games.
Energy and Water Monster Game - Energy and Water Conservation
Take a simple step by reminding everyone in the household to switch off lights, fans, electronic equipment when it is not in use. This is to form a habit in the long run for the children.
To reinforce this habit, we play a game on “who is the energy monster”. Assign each person with 100 points in the beginning of each month. Whoever caught wasting electricity will have some points deducted. The “energy monster” will have to set a goal on what are the actions he needs to take to improve his score.
Conduct an energy audit at home at the end of the month by getting the children to read the meter and understand the electricity bill.
Use similar activity to water conservation. It helps the kids to take ownership and see how their little daily action can save the environment.
Make the Basic 5 R’s philosophy into Daily Habit at home – Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Renew
This basic philosophy is entrenched in my kids. We do not indulge in unnecessary material things to keep up with fashion and trend. My kids do not get new set of school stationery every year like their friends or branded clothes. This practice also teaches them to lead a humble basic lifestyle. I am very passionate about preserving the environment. By practice recycling at home, my children learned many ways how their action can help in recycling:
Learn to recognize the different material of their waste. Put them in the correct bins to send to recycling centers monthly.
Used both side of the writing paper before discard in bin for recycling.
Collect food waste and help to bury in the garden. This is to turn kitchen waste into organic compost.
Request their Daddy to repair broken toys. Do not simply throw away and ask for new ones.
Give big carton box to our pet cat. That is her sleeping box. Anyway, all cats love to be in a box!
Always dig through the recycling bins at home for materials the children need for their school projects before buying any other necessary material.
Bring along carrier bag for grocery shopping. Decline plastic bags from shop owners.
Let the kids express ourselves on what they learn in drawing. They helped to draw up some posters to teach others about recycling in a children camp.

Make Ecology Craft
Turning waste material into craft is another way to teach kids about protecting the environment. Here are some craft we have created:
Carton Box into House Slipper
Glass Bottle into Vase
Animal Craft from Cereal Box and Plastic Bag
Ecology for kids is one of the most important science topics. Deterioration of the global environmental is a human-caused factor. Active parental involvement in teaching our next generation to preserve whatever remains is part of our responsibility.
